Ipswich - East Suffolk Hockey Club

Archive - IES History & Current Structure

Latest update: 25th July 2009

Ipswich - East Suffolk Hockey Club (IES), was previously known as Ipswich & East Suffolk Hockey Club and based at Chantry Park, Ipswich during the period 1986 - 1998. From May 1998, the Club accepted an invitation to become an associate member club of Rushmere Sports Club Ltd, The Street, Rushmere St. Andrew, Ipswich IP5 1DE, (Tel 01473 272525), which became the headquarters and social venue from the 98/99 season. Concurrent with the move to Rushmere, the Club was delighted to be able to agree a merger with Woodbridge LHC.

The IES mens 1st X1 competed in the East Region Hockey Association League Premier 'A' Division during the three seasons up to 2001/02 but a downturn in fortunes over the next few seasons found us competing in East Div 3 North East during 2005/06. However, an outstanding and unbeaten league campaign meant promotion to Div 2 North for 06/07. During both 06/07 and 07/08, the team finished 5th but then narrowly avoided relegation with an 8th place finish in 08/09. The ambition remains to attain Div 1 status within the forseeable future.

The ERHA East league comprises a complete divisional structure for all clubs and all levels of mens teams. Within this, the Mens 2nd X1 are competing in Division 4NE, the 3rd X1 in Division in 5NE and the 4th X1 in Division 6NE as well, during the 09/10 season. (NE = North East sub-division of the East League). The club is running 4 mens league teams during 09/10.

The Ladies 1st X1 were promoted from East Div 2C in 06/07 and competed in East Division 1 North during both 07/08 and 08/09 when respectable mid-table finishes were achieved. The team is aiming to improve on this during 09/10. The Ladies 2nd X1 is again again competing in the Suffolk Premier Division during 09/10 having finished mid table last season. The Ladies 3rd X1 gained promotion from Suffolk 1st Division last season and therefore join the 2nds competing in the Suffolk Premier for 09/10.

Friendly fixtures for all Club teams make up the balance of a full season of hockey activity. The friendly fixtures programme includes about 8 - 10 Mixed X1 games scheduled for midweek evenings at Framlingham College. These games very much follow in the tradition of truly social hockey with a visit to the local pub for a beer afterwards being at the top of the agenda.

Altogether the Club offers a wide range of hockey for all men and women enthusiasts of the sport and new members will be welcome, subject to ability and commitment.

For outdoor hockey during 2009/10 the full Saturday Home match programme is to be played on the Copleston School artificial pitch. Midweek training details, also at Copleton School, for 09/10 are to be found elsewhere on this site.

Indoor hockey on Monday evenings (October - March) is also offered at our Rushmere Sports Club Headquarters in the Suffolk Indoor Leagues & Cups competitions (players are subject to selection).

We place strong emphasis on our youth programme for the ~6 - 14 years age group with coaching sessions on Sunday mornings at Copleston School from 10.30am - 12.00noon throughout the season and opportunities to play in various matches and tournaments.

!! Finally, please do not confuse us with our good friends at Ipswich Hockey Club
(Based at Henley Road and Tuddenham Road, Ipswich).

!! The same sentiment now applies to 'Ipswich Cranes' HC, having added the 'Ipswich' ahead of the 09/10 season after simply being known as Cranes for several decades.
